-- Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland
Hi. My name is Jane. I used to hate it, but now I am resigned.
I like... my high school where everyone owns different designer bags, running at night, my bunny (who is named Bunny Bunny), summer sunshine, hermit crabs, when people rob banks, a strong values system, Josh Holloway (Saywer) from "Lost," falling in love, smoothies from Jamba Juice, Jay Gatsby (he is cute!), pilates, pink elephants on parade (and Disneyland, the happiest place on earth), palm trees and feeling alive.
I'm addicted to... taking risks, diet coke, buying on-sale clothes, white/asian trash, researching colleges, sudoku, stupid jokes, California, spell-check, and the color pink.
I hate... fake people, tone-deafness, being short, stereotypes, huge cars, rude parents, airplane sounds, Garfield the cat, Angelina Jolie, bad actors, being exhausted, wearing contacts for more than six hours in a row, summer homework, persons without morals, yoga, and gauchos or whatever those ugly pants are called they're called.
I'm very torn, confused, and intrigued by the whole college process. At first, with my interest in math/science, I thought I'd have a bigger advantage and more confidence in an all women's college in those traditionally male-dominated disciplines. Then I realized that discrimination isn't solved by segregation. So it was off to a tech school for me, until I realized that I actually like humanities and social sciences—quite a lot. Besides, I consistently do better in critical reading than math (800 CR, 720 M) on the SAT. Blah. So now I'm thinking Liberal Arts College—the difficulty is getting my parents to "approve" one. Being traditional Asian parents, they insist that the UC's or some other research university (read: MIT) would be the best for me. They also believe that Williams, Bowdoin, and Haverford are second rate schools. It's a bit sad. I have rebelled against this strongly, enough to create a list of colleges that I am currently thinking of that my parents (almost) totally agree on.
Here they are:
1) Harvey Mudd: I visited it. It was the most welcoming, friendly, happy, sunny, quirky (ie: nerdy), California-y, sweet school that I have visited. I love it, and it even graduated an astronaut before (my ultimate ambition is to be the first woman/person to Mars). Only problem: Financial Aid. HMC is infamous for its huge loans. According to my parents, it is completely fame-less.
2) Wellesley: my parent's favorite. They are afraid of me + opposite gender. It's famous in Asia. I don't know about the all-girls thing, the science department doesn't seem that strong either. It's very beautiful and tradition-oriented though, which I love.
3) Davidson: the South is sunny, Davidson is 2% Asian, Ranked #10 in U.S. News, pretty famous, supposedly intellectual atmosphere. I like the Eating Houses. There is nothing really special here, and I've never visited it.
4) Mt Holyoke: went here for math research and I LOVED it. Beautiful, strong in sciences, low pressure, incredibly "sisterly" atmosphere, consortium with Amherst and UMass takes pressure off. Parents think it sounds like a (prestige-less) nunnery.
5) Dartmouth: parents forced me to apply to 1 Ivy. I like how Dartmouth is a big, green, foresty, academic summer camp with cute guys. I don't like how everyone gets fat from drinking and eating and greek life in the disturbingly freezing weather.
6) Whitman: nearby WA school, very good reputation in these parts. Sounds very intellectual, close knit, close to home. I like the Northwest and Walla Walla is cute. Greeks bug me, though, and so does the proximity to home.
7) UW: Safety school. I actually kind of detest UW. I pray I don't come here. If I do, I will do engineering like all the rest of the depressed Asians at UW who couldn't get into better/happier schools.
Other possibilities:
8) Wheaton: because Jesus is my homeboy.
9) Bowdoin: I love how it is located on a beach on a coast in Maine. I have a friend in Maine and she is cool. I find the name very, very beautiful. Just have a "feeling", even though I've never visited.
10) Oxford College of Emory University: because I need a safety that I don't hate.
11) Pomona: Sunny, sunny California. Super-good reputation translates to super-selective. Didn't get the same vibe as from Harvey Mudd, felt it was a bit elitist, but I am biased.
Random facts: I really want to apply ED somewhere, to save myself the whole college trouble. I like riddles. I like you, too, if you continue reading about my life through these journal entries.
The end.
Jane
