-- My Dad
Kenneth. 17. Last year of high school! '07! Spontaneous. Intelligent. Motivated. Athletic. I'm ready to graduate out of high school and start living that Laguna Beach life.
When I'm not in school or running 12 miles (ouch) I like to hang out with my friends and just spaz out for no plausible reason. I also like to "stay fresh" with the clothes (j/k but not really), eat, run, play basketball, be on MySpace (extremely addicting) and make people laugh. I used to play video games, but I kind of grew out of that.
I'm a 17 year old senior at an all-boys and private high school in Newark, New Jersey. My school is a college-prep school in Newark, which is unique because all of the surrounding high schools are public and it's in the heart of downtown Newark. Although Newark is mostly black, there are different races represented in my school. Full of blacks, whites, Brazilians, Portuguese, etc. it's definitely a melting pot. It's about 700 students and there are no AP classes.
Senior year is crazy because I have to start thinking about applying early action, how many schools to apply to, and doing well on the SAT's (I've been doing about 2 practice tests a day since August). It'll also be hard leaving my high school friends who were like family to me.
I've worked extremely hard throughout my whole high school career because my neighborhood and other surroundings have taught me that nothing in life is facile. The only time success comes before work is in the dictionary.
This year, I've taken on leadership positions in my extracurriculars. Over the summer while at cross-country camp in Vermont, I was named a co-captain of the cross-country, indoor, and outdoor track teams. Also, I was named the managing editor of my school newspaper. It feels good knowing those four years of my diligence and perseverance has finally paid off. I'm also trying to get my driver's license. I know that all these obstacles, topped with me getting home 7'o clock every night and college applications, will present challenges. But I'm more than 100% sure that with God's help everything will be facilitated.
Ever since I was 5 years old, learning about Daniel Hale Williams being the first black to successfully perform open heart surgery, I have made it my life's goal to become a cardiologist. This means a prestigious college plus dedication minus some social life. But I believe the trade-offs are well worth it.
At first, I thought my top college choice was Columbia University after visiting it several times. I've lived in an urban area my whole life, so I didn't want to make any dramatic changes. But I know how New York is the city that never sleeps, which means I will have limited areas to have to myself to study, etc. I feel as though that the College of William and Mary is high on my list, especially after visiting it and considering that I'll be able to spend a lot of time with my unique and prophetic Aunt Pat (Pat you know what I mean). Despite a slight drop in grades during my junior year, due to honors Chemistry, I am still one of the top ranked students in my class.
In college, I'm not looking forward to isolating myself from the outside world by being locked up in my dorm with books all day. I plan to do a lot of studying, but I also want it to be in equilibrium with having fun.
Wherever I choose to go, I look forward to a great education that will prepare me for medical school and my career, life-long friends, and a new outlook on life.
I can't wait 'til college! '07!
Kenneth
