Consider Your State Schools
Whether you’re looking for an academic safety—in case you don’t get into Harvard—or a financial safety—in case their financial aid package just isn’t doing it for you—a state school may be just what you’re looking for in order to fill out the list of schools to which you’ll apply.

While the ultimate cost of any school is dependent on the size of the financial aid package offered, state schools have a head-start over private schools by offering lower tuition for in-state residents. (Note: Out-of-state residents typically pay tuition much closer to that for a private school.)

Don’t dismiss your local state school as being low on prestige or lacking the academic rigor of a private school. Many state universities are highly regarded and extremely competitive. If you are seeking an additional challenge, research the honors programs offered at your local state school. Selecting and getting into the right program can make all the difference.
