Marine Corps Officer Candidate School

College graduates who wish to join the Marines as commissioned officers can attend Officer Candidate School, 10 weeks of intensive training at the Marine Corps Combat Development Command in Quantico, VA. Those who wish to attend OCS must have received 1000 on the SAT or their combined score from English and math section of the ACT must be at least 45. They must pass a physical command, and the application requires a personal essay and references. Once admitted, the Marine Corps pays attendees a salary and covers their meals, housing, materials, and travel to and from OCS.

For students still in college but not enrolled in NROTC, Platoon Leaders Class (PLC) is an option. Freshmen and sophomores travel to Quantico during the summers for two six-week classes; juniors attend a single 10-week class. The training does not interfere with the students' college studies - in fact, they may be eligible for course credit for their PLC participation. Students from any college with any major may apply, but they must maintain a C average to ensure their commission. Participants are paid for their time in class and may qualify for an opportunity to attend the PLCs for aviation and legal training. As an additional benefit, attendees may be eligible for up to $7,000 of tax-free assistance to help pay for college.

Upon completion of either PLC or OCS, there is no obligation at all to join the Marines. But should a graduate decide to join at that point, they are commissioned at the rank of second lieutenant. Applicants to either program must be United States citizens and in good moral and legal standing.

After Marines receive a commission, they all attend The Basic School, six months (also in Quantico) of training in leadership, land navigation, weapons, small-unit tactics, and communications.

To apply for PLC or OCS, contact an Selection Officer in your area.
