"It's a large university that can provide all the resources students need to be successful," relates a marketing major, "but the campus is small enough that I feel as though I'm a part of a community, not just a number." While "very big classes" do happen on this campus, "small class sizes" are the standard. The academic atmosphere is "challenging" but "manageable." "Professors tend to either be very good or very bad," says a math major. "There's not really any middle ground." There are "enthusiastic and definitely dedicated" faculty members who are "accessible" and "willing to help you throughout the semester." There are also "dead wood professors," "boring" lecturers, and profs who "don't care about students." A lot of students gripe about the "unusable registration system," but administrators reportedly do a bang-up job overall. "They're incredibly nice and have gone out of their way to help me on multiple occasions," beams a business major.

These undergrads are overwhelmingly from in-state, and—except for a smattering of international students—virtually all of them are "from the Midwest." The fact that UNI is "close to home" is a big reason why many students choose this school. Otherwise, "on average, people around here are average." "People here seem to be geared toward graduating and getting a job in their field." About 10 percent are older than 25 years of age. Students describe themselves as "friendly," "fun" types who "accept people for who they are" and "are fairly involved with campus activities." "Fitting in isn't a problem," promises one student. "The right group will find you."

Students Say

According to students at UNI, there are “a lot of” “amazing opportunities” at pretty much any given time. “If you are ever bored,” admonishes one student, “it’s your own fault.” Students can join close to 200 clubs and organization, or they can stay active in the “really popular” and pretty awesome recreation center. Intramurals are big. Intercollegiate sports bring out large crowds—particularly football—and “a ton of school spirit” is evident all over campus. Many students also crow about the “delicious” and often locally grown campus food. Some students tell us that “it’s quiet on weekends” because surrounding Cedar Falls is “a fairly boring Iowa town” and because “a large portion of the school population goes home.” Other students insist that “the weekends are not tumbleweed season if you’re outgoing enough to find something to do.” “A lot of students drink and spend weekends at the bars.” “There is a clear distinction between your average student and the hardcore partiers,” though, and “it’s surprising how many people like to just hang out in other [students’] dorms or apartments.”

Sustainability

Scope and sustainability go hand in hand at the University of Northern Iowa, as the university’s greening efforts go beyond campus borders to impact the entire state of Iowa. UNI’s Center for Energy and Environmental Education (CEEE) provides insight and direction on issues of energy conservation, renewable/alternative energy sources, local food systems, and sustainability to state organizations and businesses while providing opportunities for faculty and student research. The Iowa Waste Reduction Center addresses waste issues throughout the state and is in the midst of a regional program to build community and business composting infrastructure. On-campus, environmental issues are also tackled in the classroom with sustainability-focused courses offered in the fields of education, natural sciences, and social and behavioral sciences. UNI’s liberal arts core program incorporates the issue of sustainability and environmental responsibility within the curriculum and the capstone course “Environment, Technology, and Society” has specific modules devoted explicitly to the topic. UNI’s Green Plaza at the McLeod Center is a green roof project that acts to cool the air, reduce noise, prevent fire, conserve water and reduce storm water runoff. Dining services is also making a difference by eliminating the use of many disposable items, implementing refillable mug programs, and converting to centralized food processing to reduce waste. A local buying program reduces packaging and shipping waste and use of a primary local vendor for food and supplies results in the use of fewer delivery trucks. Currently, an impressive thirteen buildings are in the midst of a new, single-stream, recycling pilot program that is expected to dramatically increase campus waste diversion rates.

The Waterloo Municipal Airport is only a 15 minute drive from campus. Rental cars are available for trips from the airport to campus, as well as taxis.

Driving Instructions to Campus
The easiest way to travel to the University of Northern Iowa is via Interstate 380 or US 63 from the South, US 63 or 218 from the North, US 20 from the West, and US 20 from the East. The campus is conveniently situated in the southwest part of Cedar Falls at the junction of University Avenue and Hudson Road.
