The unique facilities at Johnson State College include: 1,000-acre nature preserve, visual arts center, human performance laboratory, digital media labs, performing arts center, science laboratories, recording studios, community service learning center, Vermont interactive television site, Snowboard Park and 18 hole official Frisbee Golf Course.
Johnson State College, located in the small town of Johnson (population of about 3,200), is a school that offers a little something for everyone. Johnson is a classic New England college town. The campus, which overlooks the Lamoille River Valley, is surrounded by some of the highest mountains in Vermont. Main Street offers restaurants and stores geared toward the college student. The Vermont Studio Center, located in downtown Johnson, attracts nationally and internationally known writers and artists in all media.
For outdoors enthusiasts, there is no end to the activities, all year round. With 223 mountains higher than 2,000 feet and access to the Long Trail nearby, you'll find endless opportunities for hiking, climbing, biking, camping, snowshoeing, snowboarding, skiing and more! There are also more than 400 rivers, lakes and ponds in Vermont where you can swim, fish, kayak and canoe.
The winter is when the fun really begins! Skiers and riders from all over the country and the world choose Vermont's winter resorts. Smugglers' Notch Resort in Jeffersonville runs a daily shuttle bus to the mountain from the college, a 15-minute drive.
And Stowe Mountain Resort, located on top of Mount Mansfield, Vermont's highest peak at 4,395 feet above sea level, is only a 30 minute drive from campus.
Jay Peak Resort boasts the most snow in the East, and is just 45 minutes from campus.
Johnson State is about an hour's drive from Burlington, Vermont's largest city, and a college town itself. Burlington overlooks Lake Champlain, the Adirondacks and the Green Mountains and offers shopping, art, music, theater, food and more. Johnson is also just under two hours from Montreal, a gorgeous city with a vibrant culture and nightlife.
Student Organizations & Activities
With over 30 student groups to choose from, Johnson State College undergrads are involved in club sports, the campus radio station, the student newspaper, dance ensemble, and dozens of other recreations. Other clubs focus on majors or prospective careers. And yet others strive to service the college or surrounding communities such as our SERVE organization. Men can choose from six varsity sports: basketball, cross-country, golf, lacrosse, soccer, and tennis. Women choose from six: basketball, cross-country, soccer, softball, tennis, and volleyball. Johnson State College offers a full complement of intramural and recreation activities for its student body. Intramural activities include both seasonal leagues (i.e. indoor soccer, basketball & floor hockey) and one-night events (i.e. hikes & tournaments).
