Prerequisites are Biology (8 semester hours), Chemistry (12 semester hours, which can be satisfied by any combination of Inorganic, Organic, Biochemistry, or Molecular Biology courses), and Physics (4 semester hours). In addition the understanding of basic biochemistry molecular biology concepts is required. An additional 8 semester hours of unspecified science course work is required. This requirement can be met by taking other courses in any of the above three categories. The MCAT is required, and scores must be from within three years of application.

Graduates

Of the roughly 5,000 UW School of Medicine alumni, about 50 percent are practicing or training in fields designated as physician-shortage specialties, which include family physicians, general internists, general pediatricians, psychiatrists, general surgeons, and general practitioners. Among students in the 1996 graduating class, 62 percent entered residency programs in primary care fields, which encompass family medicine, internal medicine, and pediatrics.
