Finance is the area in which Tippie’s reputation is the strongest; marketing is another of the school’s strengths. Both full-time and part-time students complete a comprehensive core curriculum before undertaking a concentration. Students report that instruction is best in concentration courses but that, throughout the curriculum, “Academics are strenuous and relevant. There is meaning in what we learn.” The program is “very focused on the core skills and knowledge set rather than on chasing fads or flights of fancy.” The relatively small size of the program means that it’s a very personalized experience. “Professors, administrators, and classmates know one another personally and service is given on a one-on-one basis.” Students also recognize drawbacks to the size of their program, telling us that “it prevents us from being ranked highly by publications that rely heavily on feedback from a random pool of potential employers because we don’t send a great deal of people to California or New York.”

Tippie professors “are both good teachers and cutting-edge researchers.” Professors typically “have business experience through consulting, owning consulting companies, or [working] in business before teaching. They are not afraid to challenge you to work to your potential. Most really care about preparing you and try to give you the edge to be successful.” They also “concentrate on our learning; an A is great, but learning the material is more important than a grade.” Administrators “are passionate about the success of this program, and are in touch with students’ needs.”

Campus Life

Students Say

Because the Tippie MBA is “a small program at a large university, everyone is encouraged to get involved in many different things. There is a great sense of community among those in the program.” Full-time students, in particular, are “really involved with campus activities like case competitions, social nights out, international celebrations, volunteer opportunities, sporting events, cultural and performing arts events, and more.” Because “Iowans love their football . . . for most home games the MBA Association has a company-sponsored tailgate. The tailgates are fun and also allow for some networking with the sponsoring company.”

Thank God It’s Thursday (there are no MBA classes held on Fridays) is a tradition here that “typically involves going to bars, but we also use TGIT events to build ourselves professionally. For example: We hold a wine tasting and invite the medical, law, and pharmacy students; we take private tours at the Museum of Art; students participate in golf lessons; or we have an occasional Texas Hold ‘Em tournament (you never know when you’ll have to entertain an important client in Vegas).” The MBA program “holds most of its classes in a brand-new building across from the fairly new general business building.” Students say, “It’s very nice, and there is almost always something going on besides classes, whether it is an executive speaker, alumni event, awards ceremony, or a student organization function.” Because Tippie “has a tremendous international community,” students enjoy “social activities that include dinners for events like Diwali, Lunar New Year, and Thanksgiving where we share our cultures.”
