School's environmental commitment:
1: The Fowler Center for Business as an Agent of World Benefit is an academic center that bridges the gap between theory and practice for both management practitioners and scholars. Through intimate, meaningful collaborations with individuals from a diverse range of organizations, the Fowler Center guides managers to embed sustainability in the core of their business, creating value for society and the environment in ways that create even more value for their customers and shareholders. They are currently developing a Nobel-level prizing system, the Flourish Prizes, a global initiative to recognize businesses that serve as agents of world benefit in alignment with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. In October 2014, the Fowler Center organized a globally attended Global Forum, “Flourish and Prosper: Business as An Agent of World Benefit,” structured like an appreciative inquiry summit and which featured prominent speakers on topics related to sustainable value. Faculty affiliated with the Fowler Center include David Cooperrider, PhD, Fairmount Santrol – David L. Cooperrider Professor in Appreciative Inquiry and one of the inventors of appreciative inquiry (along with Ronald Fry, PhD , Professor of Organizational Behavior); and Chris Laszlo, PhD, originator of the concept of embedded sustainability and flourishing enterprise.
2: In the second year of Weatherhead’s MBA program, students engage in practicums that deepen their mastery of design in management and sustainable value through hands-on project work, reinforcing theory with on-the-ground practice in ways that can surprise, instruct, and enlighten. The MBA Institute in Sustainable Value and Social Entrepreneurship is one of the practicum options and was named one of the 10 Most Innovative Business School Courses by Forbes. The concept of sustainable value shows how environmental and social challenges can turn into business opportunities when we capitalize on entrepreneurial and “intrapreneurial” initiative. Students work as teams of consultants with locally headquartered companies and non-profits that benefit directly from their knowledge and creativity.
3: Embedded throughout the Weatherhead School of Management’s curriculum and program development are three themes: leadership at all four levels, learning to manage by designing, and business as an agent of world benefit. This third theme combines the principles of appreciative inquiry and sustainable value. Customer service, productivity and the bottom line are no longer the only benchmarks of business success. Weatherhead focuses on the human experience, changing the way managers frame problems, observe interactions and lead organizations to flourish. In this cutting edge reframing of sustainability, every social and global issue is seen as an opportunity to ignite innovation, eco-entrepreneurship and new sources of value.
