The Carnegie Foundation classifies SIUC as a high research activity university, and ranks our University as among the top 4 percent of higher education institutions for research in the United States. SIUC's multi-million volume Morris Library is one of five Associated Research Libraries in the state. Research begins at the undergraduate level, where students enjoy multiple opportunities for mentor-guided individual scientific, creative, and academic projects from their first semester. The University also boasts a fully equipped recreation center, comprehensive health and wellness center, a student center that is one of the largest of its kind in the nation, plus multiple venues for musical and theatrical performances and intercollegiate athletics.

SIUC students can expect the individual attention and community atmosphere associated with smaller schools. The teaching ratio is 15.7/1 with more than 80 percent of classes containing fewer than 30 students. Living Learning Communities, residential communities arranged by major or college, incorporate classroom learning with everyday life. More than 400 Registered Student Organizations provide social, academic and service opportunities as well as a sense of belonging for our student population.

Students from all 50 states and more than 90 countries choose from among more than 250 undergraduate majors, minors and specializations, 74 master's degrees and 32 doctoral and professional degrees. The university includes the colleges of Agricultural Sciences, Applied Sciences and Arts, Business, Education and Human Services, Engineering, Liberal Arts, Mass Communication and Media Arts, and Science as well as a School of Law and a School of Medicine.

A hallmark of SIUC is a tradition of affordability and accessibility. The university administered more than $282 million in financial assistance in fiscal year 2010. Approximately 85 percent of the student population receives some form of financial aid. SIUC offers a tuition rate equivalent to in-state tuition to students from Arkansas, Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri, and Tennessee, and a Legacy Tuition Rate for children of alumni. More More
