Founded in 1787, Castleton State College is the 18th oldest higher-learning institute in the United States and the oldest in the state of Vermont. The historic village of Castleton in western Vermont is home to the college's 165-acre campus. Of the 1,900 undergraduates who attend Castleton full-time, nearly 1,100 hail from the state of Vermont. The historic village of Castleton in western Vermont is home to the college's 165-acre campus. Of the 1,900 undergraduates who attend Castleton full-time, nearly 1,100 hail from the state of Vermont. Other students come to Castleton from Vermont's New England neighbors and the Mid-Atlantic States.

Castleton State College is dedicated to providing an education that embraces the principles of liberal arts and the fundamentals of career preparation. Among the innovative aspects of Castleton's curriculum is a program called Soundings, in which first-year students and juniors must attend a series of events in order to earn their academic credits. The Soundings events range from theater and dance to debates and speeches by renowned leaders. First-year students also enroll in First-Year Seminar, a normal general education course with an additional component designed to teach them the skills they'll need to thrive in a collegiate environment.

Castleton's ten residence halls house a total of nearly 1000 students. Each hall offer wireless internet access and cable television. On-campus students enjoy meals at the Huden Dining Hall or Fireside Cafe. Students who live off-campus find housing in the village of Castleton, as well as nearby Fair Haven and Rutland. All students may bring automobiles to campus.

The array of student activities at Castleton is wide. With over 40 student groups to choose from, Castleton's undergrads are involved in club sports, the marching band, the student newspaper, the campus radio station, the outing club, rugby, and dozens of other recreations. Other clubs focus on majors or prospective careers. And yet others strive to service the college or surrounding communities. Men can choose from ten varsity sports: baseball, basketball, cross-country, football, golf, ice hockey, lacrosse, skiing, soccer, and tennis. Women choose from ten: basketball, cross-country, field hockey, ice hockey, lacrosse, skiing, soccer, softball, tennis, and volleyball. A large portion of Castleton's undergrads participate in intramural or recreational sports. And skiing, snowboarding, and other snow sports are favorite pastimes all around. More More
