Some students tell us that Cal Western can be "overly competitive [and] extremely cutthroat due to the forced curve." Others say, "Competition varies." One student analogizes, "The three sections during first year were like Goldilocks. One was very competitive; one was laidback; and the third was sort of in between." Everyone agrees that academic life is "substantially less competitive after the first year."

Socially, the school can have "a commuter-school feel." Whatever it lacks in "sense of pride and community," though, it makes up in diversity galore. "There is no stereotypical Cal Western student," declares ones student. "They come in all shapes, sizes, genders, ages, backgrounds." Another student says, "We have a great mix of people, and not just your typical law students." There are a few "California slacker dudes." You'll also find an even representation of men and women and a visible gay community.

The school's location is a double-edged sword. According to students, the "metro location is great for connecting with [the] legal community, but there is always [a] hesitation about staying too late and walking to your car." A safe escort is an option as "there are security guards available to walk you to your car if requested, [but] they stop after a four-block radius from the school." Before you walk to your car you must park it, and "parking is an incredible issue for the students" as well. You can pay "prohibitively expensive [fees] at a nearby garage [or] duke it out on the streets and hope for free or metered parking." Either way, "it's a hassle." San Diego is, however, a "gorgeous [and] exciting" city. "It's sunny for about ten months out of the year." The surfing is gnarly, and "there are so many things to do here." If you nevertheless manage to get bored, you can always "sit out in the courtyard in the middle of January and get some sun."
