General Information: Approximately 70-75 percent of students are Texas residents. Students in the class that entered in 1999 came from 64 undergraduate institutions. About 16-20 percent of students are underrepresented minorities, and a wide age range is seen within the student body. Entering class size is 168.
Student Life: A two-day orientation introduces entering students to the school’s academic and nonacademic resources and promotes a supportive atmosphere from the beginning. First-year students also benefit from peer counseling groups and professional advising. Numerous organizations promote extracurricular, professional, community service, and religious interests, or offer support for minority or other groups of medical students. Some examples include the Family Practice Club, the Texas Medical Association Medical Student Section, and the Baylor Association of Minority Medical Students. An athletic center with exercise equipment and weights, basketball, racquetball, aerobics, and volleyball is available to medical students. Houston is home to almost two million people and is a center for commerce, industry, arts, and recreation. A dormitory operated by the Texas Medical Center is located near Baylor, although most medical students opt to live off campus in nearby residential areas.
