Career Experience
I've always enjoyed helping others to see the beauty and joy in mathematics. While in grad school, I had the opportunity to teach my own section of introductory calculus, and I found myself devoting more and more time to instruction. That experience solidified my desire to teach, and I've been a private tutor at the high school and college level for 8 years so far, coaching students to success in geometry, algebra, single- and multi-variable calculus, linear algebra, and other topics. My general approach to learning focuses on breaking down concrete problems into manageable steps, so that students feel like they have a real sense of mastery over the simple processes that build up to the final solution. I then consolidate that mastery by asking them to apply those bite-sized principles in different contexts. That way, students strengthen not only their abilities in one section of the syllabus, but also their intuition for general problem-solving.
I Love Tutoring Because
I get to lead students in turning frustration into joy! Those "aha" moments are the ultimate satisfaction for a tutor because they build confidence and make mathematical exploration a reward in and of itself. Such experiences foster a growth mindset that sets students up to become lifelong learners.
