Career Experience
While completing my Physics degree I worked as a science and technology workshop instructor during the summers. As an instructor I discovered that I loved teaching, so I tried my hand at being a private tutor. As a tutor I realized how rewarding I found the one-on-one approach of tutoring, and decided to explore other careers as an educator. After obtaining my Physics degree I worked for my alma mater university as a teaching assistant for the Physics department. Being a TA involved a lot of one-on-one help with many of the students just like my earlier work as a tutor, but I was also able to lead some of the lectures in place of the professor. I enjoyed it so much that I decided to try becoming a teacher myself. Eventually I enrolled in a teacher certification program at my university, which I enjoyed immensely and completed the first two semesters exemplarily. However, I realized in the final practicum semester that I felt like I was limited as a teacher compared to when I was tutoring. I found that teaching a class lacked the targeted, personalized instruction that I could see so many students in need of, but which I was often unable to provide with a class full of students. I made the decision to leave the program in order to pursue other avenues of teaching, eventually returning to my work as a tutor. Now I am happily employed with Tutor.com where find my work both challenging and extremely rewarding.
I Love Tutoring Because
I love tutoring because I love helping people. I know that there are so many students who need instruction beyond what their schools can provide alone and I greatly enjoy being the person who can provide that help. My favorite part of being a tutor is when I can experience with a student that moment when an idea or concept "clicks" for them and everything falls into place. That moment of clarity, especially after working so hard to understand something, is one of the greatest rewards as both a learner and a teacher. I also love tutoring because I am a bit of a perfectionist. When I was teaching high school classes it felt like I was trying to help 30 different people each navigate a different maze by giving all of them the same directions. I could give them general advice on problems I thought they might encounter but I often didn't have the time or resources to give each student the specific help they would need in order to reach their full potential. The thought pained me that there would always be some students left struggling no matter how hard I tried as a classroom teacher. That is why I decided to pursue a career as a tutor, so that I would be able to provide individualized help to students who really need it.
