Career Experience
I have done many things over my career, always seeking opportunities to experience new things. Chronologically, immediately after undergraduate school I worked as an R&D Chemical Engineer for about five years. I then returned to graduate school for a few years, and at the tail end of that period, I worked at one of the national laboratories. I made a career change at this point and went to work in Silicon Valley in UNIX and Linux Enterprise customer support for six years. I had always wanted to try teaching, and while in that customer support position, I started doing private tutoring rather heavily. After leaving that position, I decided to try formal teaching. I taught math and science (algebra, calculus, physics, and astronomy) for two years in public and private high schools. Involvement in the FIRST Robotics programs at those schools provided a connection to a local high-tech firm. That company was a government contractor involved with the ballistic missile defense (BMD) program. I worked for this company for about four years as a laboratory optical engineer and programmer in support of BMD work. I returned to industry for about three years when I joined a new biomass power plant that took invasive trees and burned them to produce steam-generated electricity. I was hired on as a plant operator, but shortly became assistant plant manager, and then plant manager. I am now working in the medical field as part of the Information Technology department of the main medical system in my community.
I Love Tutoring Because
I believe life is about constantly learning new things and that knowledge is the great equalizer in life. I love helping people understand the world around us and the tools we use to describe and make sense of it. I enjoy learning new things from my interactions with others. I believe one truly understands something when they can explain it to someone else and help that person understand it. Knowledge empowers people to be the best versions of themselves.
