Career Experience
Hello! I'm Murphy, and I have taught and/or tutored in many capacities with more than five years of experience. I began tutoring while I was a student in university. With a group of peers, I tutored math, English, science, physics, and social sciences to incarcerated teenagers. I have educated university faculty and staff on how systems of oppression exist in the world. Eventually, I became a paraprofessional in a high school and assisted students with disabilities in their daily school lives, with an emphasis on tutoring their class material. In 2019, I began teaching English as a second language in different academies. With all of the happenings in 2020, I have transitioned to teaching English as a second language online and tutoring English to first language English speakers as well.
I Love Tutoring Because
I truly value what education provides to students, beyond the traditional academic mindset. Sites of learning provide socialization for students, the exploration of their own places in the world, and where they want to continue growing as students into professionals in their own fields. I find joy in seeing how students apply their education beyond the walls of an institution - into their own lives. For example, I studied Spanish for 5 years before I moved to Madrid, Spain, where I used my formal education to integrate myself into a new culture. I made a million mistakes in my own Spanish cultural integration, but I wouldn't trade thoses learning moments for anything. I have an ability to communicate with so many more people, which I truly cherish. I want any and all students to find their own paths of applying their education to their real world experiences and witnessing the joy of the academic-personal exchange.
