Career Experience
I have been a certified English teacher, Grades 9 and 10, for five years now. I have also taught English 9 Honors. I have experience working one-on-one with students who need direct help with reading comprehension and writing of all forms including academic, evidence-based writing, creative writing, and research-based writing. I have taught a wide variety of literature, nonfiction, poetry, and drama and love sharing that knowledge with my students. I believe teaching critical thinking skills and the ability to translate that analysis through communication is one of the most important skills all students need, regardless of what they believe their future holds.
I Love Tutoring Because
I can really help students with their writing. I feel that in regards to writing instruction, one of the key things necessary to help anyone struggling is to scaffold. An essay can seem like an arduous task, and breaking it up into smaller steps can really help make it seem manageable. Scaffolding also makes it easier to make changes before you've gone so far in the process that making a change requires starting all over again. It's important to look at your thesis and the evidence you have to prove that thesis before you start writing. Having students ask themselves if they can actually prove their thesis with the evidence they have focuses them on their argument. I believe that writing instruction is all about breaking it up into smaller steps and giving students the tools and help to realize that they can be successful writers.
