Academics

Founded in 1833, Haverford College in Pennsylvania is "small, but exceptionally vibrant and engaging," offering a "solid academic experience" under one of the country's oldest honor codes. Though founded by Quakers, the school is nonsectarian, but the community aspect of its founders remains, creating what one student calls "a challenging, interesting environment with the best people I know." The teacher education program is one of the most notable, but there is a strong emphasis on writing and a "breadth of amazing programs" for everyone else. The real love affair is with Haverford's "awesome, invested" professors, who "lead a group of idealistic students to point—but never force—us into a better way of thinking." They want to put in the time to get to know you, and the small size of the school "allows for plenty of opportunities for collaborating with faculty and staff and building a relationship." "You are more than just a face in a classroom of many; you are a unique person that has something to offer," says a student. "My 'big intro lecture course' has forty-one students," says another. "My professor still knows me by name, and we have long conversations when we pass on Founder's Green." The school's learning environment stresses "engaging in hard and honest conversations with your peers," and "students have a lot of power" through their roles in the administration of the college. "I love the amount of independence and autonomy [the school] gives to its students," says a student. Because of the kind of student this attracts, "we wind up with a really conscientious student body invested in the school." The resources available to students here are incredible, as well. You can get "credit for research" (there is plenty of research here in every department), and if you want to go off campus for research, "you can get funding for that as well."

Student Body

Everyone is "passionate," "people are always up for intellectual discussion," and "everyone works very hard." Students here were all motivated enough to get in and "want to succeed for themselves and not to appease others." Students describe other students as having "hearts of gold and giant brains that they put to use to change the world for the better." "It's a small school full of nice kids—not naive (well, sometimes naive), just genuinely compassionate and interested in other people, whether or not that's 'cool,'" says a student. Though all are bound by "intellectual passion and interests outside of academics," diversity otherwise on campus "lacks a little." Still, "the great thing about Haverford is that, although we have a variety of students from all different social circles, everyone is a touch awkward." This is a fact that the "nerdy and ridiculously friendly" students embrace. "I feel like I could potentially become friends with anyone on campus," says a student.

Campus Life

The culture of "trust, concern, and respect" created by the honor code carries over into the rest of this "awesome, at times idiosyncratic, place where community thrives and cliques are very loose if existent at all." "The honor code unifies everyone." "Being able to take an exam in your own room, sitting relaxed on your bed because your professor trusts you not to look at your books is one of the luxuries of being here," says a student. People study hard here, but they take a break over the weekend at a party or two "before cracking the books again. Athletics are also "really important" for much of the student body—most here are athletic, even if it's not at a varsity level—and some of the male sports teams "function like fraternities" (which do not exist at HC). Because it's a small place, "sometimes it feels like everyone knows your business," but everyone is so insanely nice that "the social scene is great" and the only thing you'll hear complaints about is the food. Students govern themselves and the happenings at the school through the "Plenaries" that happen twice a year, when the majority of the student body must be present. New York and Philadelphia are both easily accessible by train, and "Suburban Square (the local outdoor shopping center) is a great place to hang out, get coffee, or even go shopping."

Students Say

The typical Haverford College graduate has a starting salary of around $38,600. Students feel that Haverford offers a great deal of internship opportunities, especially ones with financial support. Koshland Integrated Natural Sciences Center and the Hurford Center for Arts and Humanities act as grant-making organizations to fund internships and research experiences on-campus, locally in the city of Philadelphia, across the U.S. and abroad. The Integrated Natural Science Center offers "plenty of internship opportunities." The Center for Career and Professional Advising, with a mission to "empower" past and enrolled students to "translate their Haverford liberal arts education into a rewarding life," offers several job boards like CareerConnect as well as other helpful resources.

With so many choices of majors and opportunities to take courses at neighboring schools, it's no wonder that some of the only unifying characteristics of Haverford alumni are that they are prepared and successful. Ken Ludwig, a 1972 double major in English and music theory and composition, credits his time at Haverford—where he wrote librettos for school shows and studied Shakespeare—with his success in graduate school. After Haverford, he went on to earn degrees from Harvard (where he studied under Leonard Bernstein) and Cambridge. Ludwig knew that Haverford was the right place for him after his first visit to the campus: "In addition to having the best academics I had ever seen, [it] was a very human place—a caring place—where I would feel happy." Just as Ludwig's career trajectory can be traced back to his time at Haverford, other graduates find themselves taking advantage of Haverford's myriad liberal arts offerings, trying their hand at numerous careers before deciding on something that might not have even crossed their minds without certain experiences they had during college. One political science graduate from 2008 underscores how much her undergraduate experience at Haverford meant to her in her post-college life, particularly when she found herself following a different path than she originally envisioned for herself: "The best part of the Haverford experience is that is allows you to be malleable. A liberal arts degree doesn't say that this person has to do one thing: I've gone from being a teacher, to academic consultant, and now a business development manager for a big corporation. My experience has let me be nimble."

Though small, Haverford College is proving that it’s not the size that counts, but rather the idea and passion behind making a change. The Gardner Integrated Athletic Center was the first recreation center to achieve LEED Gold certification in the United States. Haverford students can plant and weed in the college’s expanding student garden, and study local flora in the on-campus arboretum. In fact, 30 percent of Haverford’s grounds are maintained organically, and the college has reached a 23 percent waste-diversion rate. Haverford has reduced the toxins flowing into the groundwater by switching to organic fertilizer and using porous salt, and by planting a living roof with sedum on three of its buildings. Haverford has a formal Sustainability Committee focused on reducing energy use, food composting, and emissions. Facilities Management has retrofitted 33 percent of the buildings on campus with new HVAC systems, windows, and insulation. Haverford offers a car share program, a bike program, a vanpool, and group transport to the other colleges in its consortium, so students don’t have to drive. Other environmental improvements are being made in the dining halls, where better recycling, pre- and post-consumer food composting, a new dishwashing machine, and biodegradable or reusable dishware are all making a difference. Two new residence halls, built to LEED Gold standards, are equipped with numerous green specifications including green roofs and high tech HVAC systems that are more efficient and decrease energy consumption. Impressively, 100 percent of the energy used on campus is powered by wind, ensuring that Haverford is indeed a place for pioneers.

Transportation

Types of Transportation Available to Campus
Philadelphia International Airport is 20 miles from campus. Main Line Airport Limousine Service will take you directly to Stokes Hall on the Haverford campus; to call for this service, use the airport courtesy phones (push Main Line). If you want to call in advance, Main Line's number is 610-525-0513 (or 800-427-3464 in Pennsylvania). Limousines leave approximately every 45 minutes. Public transportation is also available from airport to campus. Take a SEPTA Airport Express from the airport to 30th St. Station in Philadelphia; trains run every 30 minutes and take 20 minutes to reach 30th St. From 30th St. Station, take either the R-5 Paoli Local or the Bryn Mawr Local to Haverford (not all trains stop at Haverford; check timetables available at the station). The ride from 30th St. to Haverford station takes approximately 16 minutes. The walk from Haverford station to campus takes 8 to 10 minutes: Walk down Haverford Station Road. Turn left onto Lancaster Avenue; then turn right onto campus at College Lane. If you don't want to walk, the Bennett Taxi Service can drive you from the station to campus; call 525-1770 (a local call). Amtrak trains and Greyhound buses serve Philadelphia. Amtrak takes you to 30th St. Station; to get to campus from there, use the SEPTA commuter trains as described above. From the Greyhound station, walk to the Market East SEPTA train station and take the R-5 Paoli Local or the Bryn Mawr Local as described above; the ride from Market East to Haverford takes approximately 25 minutes.

Driving Instructions to Campus
From the Pennsylvania Tpke., take Exit 24 (Valley Forge Interchange) and follow signs to I-76 E. (Expy to Philadelphia). Take I-76 to Exit 28A for I-476 (South/Chester). Proceed south on I-476 to I-476 to exit 5: US30-St. Davids-Villanova exit. Turn east on U.S. 30 (Lancaster Ave.) and proceed for approximately 3.5 miles through Villanova, Rosemont, and Bryn Mawr to Haverford. After you see the Haverford Post Office on the left, turn right into the main entrance of the Haverford campus at College Lane. Follow the signs to the visitor parking lot.
