Students Say

The Elon University School of Law in Greensboro, North Carolina provides an adaptable legal education that emphasizes practical experience and preparing students to practice more quickly after graduation. In 2015, the school introduced a new two-and-a-half year program that lets students save money, get a jump on the job market, and gain more practical and leadership experience, possibly through the school's unique new residency program, which sends 2Ls around the world to learn how law is practiced and applied in the courts, private firms, government agencies, nonprofits, and corporations. This "truly one-of-a-kind" program is hailed by students as a "godsend": "With the drive to maximize that opportunity, you can greatly improve your network and skills in the residency," says a student. The school also provides "beneficial networking activities" by assigning students a currently practicing attorney as a mentor, and there is a volunteer program in place in which second year students provide mentorship to small groups of first year students. Elon has "a wide variety of personalities" that give good insight into different teaching methods, and the school is constantly involving students in activities such as "town baseball games, networking conferences, bar activities, CLEs, professor and dean monthly lunches or drinks, and coffee at the commons," to name a few. It also offers "several optional bar preparation courses and monthly targeted bar topic workshops, along with a required bar preparation course the fall prior to graduation."

The professors at Elon Law are "beyond qualified": "[they] adjust the syllabus to accommodate for the workload of students, and are absolutely enthusiastic about teaching." They "are here because they want to teach at a school that prepares students for actual practice" and "provide all of the materials required for success." Not only do Elon Law professors keep regular office hours, but they go above and beyond with flexibility; for example, "some professors would have weekly times where they would be at a coffee shop and would invite students to come sit and discuss the class over coffee." Classes are designed for students to not just learn cases but "to openly discuss if we agree or disagree with the cases." This can lead to heated conversations, but "it also leads to everyone having a better understanding of the other side," and Elon "tries to create an environment where everyone can feel comfortable having these discussions." Students begin learning through the traditional Socratic Method and "then build upon that knowledge by applying it to practice-oriented assignments, labs and externships."

Campus Life

Students Say

Students agree that the greatest strength of Elon Law is "how it feels like one big supportive family." Elon is a very small law school, so this "very close-knit" student body "feels like an extended family because we all check on each other and make sure we are prepared for exams and quizzes." With such small classes and cohorts, the social environment "can seem divided into cliques," but "there is still a cooperative spirit and an overall great and productive atmosphere." Many students socialize with each other and go out together, and cohorts can often be seen "at Greensboro Grasshoppers games or one of the local pubs/breweries in our downtime (which is not often)." The law school is young and admits diverse classes, but is "still working on making everyone feel like they belong no matter their background." Located in downtown Greensboro, and "being two blocks from the federal and state courthouses adds a certain 'je ne sais quoi,'" which emphasizes the importance of what the students at Elon Law are doing for society. The administration is "aware of how important student well-being is, and provides movie nights and other fun activities to help alleviate the stress of law school." Because the flagship school is in a different area, Elon "provides free YMCA memberships for law students."
