Career Experience
Hi there! I'm Justin - I've been working in education for over a decade and have extensive experience in tutoring, classroom teaching, school leadership, and a variety of other education-oriented capacities. I began my career in education as a lead tutor at my university; I greatly enjoyed the opportunity to support other students in developing their analytical and organizational writing skills. I often found that having a rigorous but encouraging thought-partner empowered students to produce reliably insightful, careful writing - even students who had previously lacked confidence in their ability to write at such a high level! After graduating, I continued working in education as a teacher, where I further honed my skills in supporting a diverse array of students at different grade levels. I also worked to develop an objective-based, rigorous curriculum based on the nascent Common Core state standards; this provided crucial insight into the process of assessing students, setting ambitious goals for them and then backwards-planning in order to meet those goals. After many years in the K-12 field, I've recently taken a renewed interest in higher education and will be pursuing an advanced degree. I'm excited to come back to the work that started it all: coaching students who are eager to push their skills in problem solving and critical analysis.
I Love Tutoring Because
growing up, I was fortunate enough to have educators who encouraged and inspired academic curiosity - this helped me to understand challenges in school as opportunities for creativity and discovery. Throughout my own experiences as a tutor and classroom teacher, some of the best moments have been sharing that feeling with my students as they develop their own voice and grow as creative problem solvers. Though we may not always know what the best answer or strategy is at first, we can hone our analytical 'toolkit' through practice and careful thinking - it's great to see students feel a sense of empowerment by approaching their work this way!
