Starting in October 2012, SAT and ACT test-takers will face tougher security. Here's a detailed summary of the changes announced by the College Board and ACT Inc.:
SAT Changes
Registration: Students will be required to:
- Provide the name of their current high school during registration.
- Submit a recent, recognizable photo with their mail or online registration.
- Request location and test type changes in advance. Test center changes will no longer be permitted on test day.
Test-Day: Students will be required to:
- Preregister for the SAT and SAT Subject Tests. Standby (walk-in) testing will no longer be permitted.
- Present their photo admission tickets and an acceptable form of photo ID for admittance to their designated test centers.
- Online registrants will be able to print their admission tickets by logging onto their College Board accounts.
- Mail-in registrants can have the admission ticket mailed or emailed prior to their SAT test date.
- Test center supervisors will have rosters listing each test-taker's name, date of birth, photo, gender, test type and high school.
- Cooperate during additional ID checks throughout test day.
- Upon entry and re-entry to the test center and to any test room, including following breaks
- At the completion of the test
- Sign a certification statement acknowledging that engaging in impersonation could result in referral to law enforcement and prosecution.
ACT Changes
Registration: Students will be required to:
- Submit a recognizable head-and-shoulders photo with their online or mail registration.
Test-Day:
- Students must present their photo admission ticket and an acceptable form of photo ID for admittance to their designated test center on the ACT test date.
- The test center staff will then match the photo on the student's admission ticket to the photo on the examinee roster and to the student's photo ID.
- After testing, the uploaded photo will be available to the high school the student attends.
Smart Tips
- Read all the rules in advance and be prepared.
- Prepare for a longer day. Just like at the airport, tighter security will translate into a longer check-in process at your test center.
- Be ready for ID spot checks throughout the day and during breaks.
