Research Opportunities in Sustainability: Yes
Description: http://now.uiowa.edu/2012/03/strategizing-sustainability This URL describes some of the ways in which Tippie students have been able to participate in researching and implementing real-world sustainability projects, from sourcing biomass for the University of Iowa campus operations to assisting a local food market in improving their operations by diverting organic waste for composting. The consortium of the Public Policy Center (PPC), the Department of Economics, the College of Law, the Department of Geography, and Urban and Regional Planning (URP) recently hired an environmental economist, sustainability legal scholar, environmental policy researcher, geographic information systems (GIS) expert, and economic development specialist for a Faculty Cluster Hire in Sustainability. Disciplines of the hires were strategically selected to enhance current UI strengths and address urgent needs. Funded, interdisciplinary research of these scholars is supported by staff and facilities at the PPC; teaching and service is conducted across campus through the academic departments. The resulting increase in educational opportunities and research represents an exponential advance in this area for the UI and provides expertise in a breadth of areas necessary to position Iowa as a national leader in sustainability.
School's environmental commitment:
1: Best academic recycling program on campus
2: College technology group's computer power save program adopted by entire University
