Research Centers: Because of FIT's location, students can take advantage of the cultural richness of New York-museums, galleries, libraries, conservation laboratories, and other professional resources. The graduate faculty includes working professionals in all of these areas, as well as prominent historians of costume, textiles, applied arts, and contemporary art. One of the center's most remarkable components is the Museum at FIT, which contains indexed collections of approximately 1 1/4 million examples of clothing and accessories; more than 4 million indexed fabric swatches; and a conservation laboratorydevoted to the safekeeping, maintenance, and restoration of these specialized collections. The collections, which range from the early Christian era to works of contemporary designers, also include examples of furs, quilts, furnishings, decorative arts, and the craft products of artisans from all over the world.
