Career Experience
For the past 10 years, I taught English composition, American literature, and technical writing at community colleges and a university, where I had the privilege of working with both traditional and non-traditional first-year students, military veterans, English second language students, and adult continuing education students. Before that, I worked as an editor for corporations and non-profits. I started as a journalist. I believe writing – and teaching writing – takes humility. To quote the great American writer Ernest Hemingway: “We are all apprentices in a craft where no one ever becomes master.” In part, I take that to mean respect the voice of the other person – whether that voice is a writer peer or student.
I Love Tutoring Because
I find the most reward working one-on-one with students because – let’s face it – students who take the time to improve their writing demonstrate a certain commitment, responsibility, and an eagerness to succeed. Those traits make for an enjoyable encounter for any educator.
