At Bates, you will find a community of irrepressibly enthusiastic, unapologetically smart, boldly individual, and radically aware people, who happen to think that finding the truth sometimes requires a leap into a frigid pond.
With over 100 clubs and organizations, nationally recognized centers for career development and community engaged work, a focus on sustainability, and a deep commitment to trying to live up to our mission, Bates students are active and engaged.
Yes, we're a small liberal arts college nestled in a bucolic setting, and yes, we have small class sizes, but trust us–we're not like the rest. We invite you to begin your exploration of Bates College–a place that has been an original from the start. Do we have all of the answers? No. Have we seen everything? Definitely not. We're here to keep asking, searching, and discovering enough to know that there's more to discover. We don't know what the future will bring. But if you come here, you'll help build it.

From The School
We're interested in students who work hard, are curious about the world beyond them, take intellectual risks, believe that education is not confined to a classroom, and get deeply involved in their community. Bates offers three application rounds: Early Decision I, II, and Regular Decision. Bates is a leader in the test optional movement, and has not required SAT, SAT II, or ACT scores since 1984. Bates accepts the Common Application and the Coalition Application. If the application fee is a hardship, our office offers waivers; we also accept self reported test scores.

Academic Programs
Our academic program starts with an intensive, often interdisciplinary first-year seminar and ends with an intensive, often interdisciplinary senior thesis. The thesis is meant to make a meaningful contribution to the storehouse of human knowledge; it is also often the first step toward a job or graduate study. Our student to faculty ratio is 10-to-1; there are 20 students in the average class; so not only will your professors know your name, they'll also know where you're coming from, where you want to go and how you might get there. Beyond this, during your time at Bates you will engage with research, fieldwork, internships, civic engagement — they're academically demanding, and they bring us into the world.
Purposeful Work:
Purposeful Work at Bates is about helping students discover the joy and power that arise from aligning who they are with what they do. It helps students identify and cultivate their interests and strengths and provides opportunities for them to acquire the knowledge, experiences, and relationships necessary to pursue their aspirations with imagination and integrity. It is grounded in our mission, has curricular and co-curricular aspects, and takes a four-year, developmental approach to working with students.
Internships and job shadowing: Bates Purposeful Work Internship Program offers 250 paid summer internships a year, drawing on a network of 70 core employers. Job shadowing also allows students to share a day in the life of alumni at workplaces such as ESPN, The National Institutes of Health, and the Maine Office of the Attorney General.
Purposeful Work Infusion Project: Across the curriculum, Bates professors address the question, "How does this relate to the world beyond college?"
Practitioner-Taught Courses: We invite alumni and other leaders in their fields to teach during Short Term. These fast-paced classes let students gain practical skills, expand their networks, and understand workplace dynamics.
Purposeful Work Unplugged: This Q&A with alumni features stories of success and failure, lessons learned, and purposeful work in their own lives. Recent participants include an Instagram content strategist, a New York Times editor, a venture capitalist, and several CEOs.
Outcomes: In a year of unprecedented upheaval, 92% of the Class of 2020 graduales are settled. 73% are employed, and the remainder are pursuing the next step of their education, internships, or fellowships. Our graduates pursue a wide variety of industries and careers, with the most popular including education, healthcare, finance, and technology.
In the past year, 81% of Bates students and alumni who worked with the Medical Studies Advising Committee were admitted to medical school and 100% were admitted to dental school. 100% of the Class of 2020 who applied to law school were admitted as well. Finally, 24 young alumni were awarded the prestigious Fulbright Fellowship, more than all U.S. bachelor's colleges for the second time in three years.
Majors and Degrees Offered
Bates students tend to be up for just about anything. It's a good thing we have about three dozen majors and two dozen minors to choose from.
Some are liberal-arts classics (history, mathematics, philosophy). Some are STEM-focused (neuroscience, engineering, digital & computational studies). Many draw from more than one discipline (American cultural studies, environmental studies, biochemistry, gender & sexuality studies). Some won't exist until you invent them.

Overview
From The School
Tuition, Room, Board and Fees
For the highly individualized Bates educational experience, we charge a single fee that includes tuition, room, board and fees. Costs for books, personal expenses and transportation are added to a student's budget for the purpose of estimating financial need and awarding aid. We provide more than $37 million in grant aid to our students every year. Nearly half of our students receive financial aid, and the average financial aid award, including grant, loan and work, is $51,099. Our average federal student loan debt is less than half the national average.
Financial Aid
Bates meets 100 percent of students' financial need through a combination of grant aid, loans, and student employment. Bates works closely with families to ensure that graduates have the lowest possible student loan debt — a dollar total that's less than half the national average.

At Bates, you will find a community of irrepressibly enthusiastic, unapologetically smart, boldly individual, and radically aware people, who happen to think that finding the truth sometimes requires a leap into a frigid pond. Bates students hail from 49 states and over 50 countries; 12% are the first in their family to go to college, and 27% identify as U.S. students of color.
You'll have many chances to dive into the unexpected at Bates.
Learn to surf with the Outing Club or perform a spoken-word piece at the weekly Village Club Series showcase. Test your technical skills with the High-Altitude Ballooning Club. Or your sense of rhythm with the Bollywood Dance Team.
With nearly 100 student-run clubs, you're sure to find something of interest. What you won't find are fraternities or sororities. We've never had them. Never will.
Beyond this, Bates has 42 varsity and club teams, and is a charter member of the NESCAC (New England Small College Athletic Conference). Each year we host over 60 theater productions, 6 large scale art exhibitions, and our multiple campus bands perform regularly.

From The School
Location
Bates' hometown, Lewiston, and the city of Auburn, its neighbor across the Androscoggin River, are mill towns reborn. With a combined population of about 60,000, the two cities offer the best of both worlds: A safe, close-knit community and a vibrant downtown.
Locals call the area L/A. It's full of hard-working, independent-minded people who are building meaningful, interesting lives for themselves. Once dependent on textile manufacturing, L/A now serves as a hub for Maine's health care, technology and banking industries. Inside factories that once powered the industrial revolution, you'll find startups and brewpubs. Lisbon Street, Lewiston's downtown shopping district, has cafes, bike shops, and galleries, all within a mile of campus.
Many families who live here have French Canadian roots — their ancestors put Lewiston's textile mills on the map. There's also a growing community from the African diaspora, along with many other new Americans. Thirty-four languages are spoken at the local high school. And on Lisbon Street you can get a plate of curried goat, a steaming bowl of ph?, or steak au poivre within blocks of one another.
Beyond academic and pre-professional opportunities, Maine is an incredible place to live. If you like the outdoors, it is an absolute playground and the Outing Club supports trips to surf, hike, mountain bike, whitewater raft, and ski almost every weekend.
Campus Facilities & Equipment
The 2000 students at Bates live, work, and play on our classic 109 acre campus in Lewiston, Maine. Buildings at Bates were built as long ago as the 1850s, and as recently as this year. Our newest building is the Bonney Science Center, which was designed with interdisciplinary learning and intensive research in mind. Alumni Gym is one of the most historic gyms in the country; Bates also has a nearly 27,000 square foot Athletic building, a gym, indoor and outdoor tennis courts, multiple fields, a pool, an ice arena, a squash facility, and a boathouse located on the Androscoggin River. Our campus is also carbon-neutral, meaning we release net-zero carbon dioxide emissions to the atmosphere.
Off-Campus Opportunities
Community Engagement:
Collaboration with the community and learning by doing are key aspects of academics at Bates. These two elements, which we call community-engaged learning, come together at our nationally recognized Harward Center for Community Partnerships.
Through the Harward Center, you'll have access to hundreds of hands-on experiences that will deepen your connection to Lewiston/Auburn and give you a chance to make a difference. These experiences often inspire students to dig deeper through independent research or a senior thesis.
What does community-engaged learning look like?
Environmental studies students do research on how renewable energy can cut costs for a local 127-acre vegetable farm. Students studying education spend at least 30 hours a semester working in nearby schools or after-school programs. Students interested in healthcare are invited to job-shadow surgeons, physician assistants, and radiologists at Central Maine Medical Center. And classical & medieval studies students work with staff at Museum L/A in downtown Lewiston on a plan to digitize the museum's archives.
Bates students are adventurers — while there is plenty to do on campus, you'll have plenty of encouragement to explore the wider world!
