OWU is one of only five independent unde...An Ohio Wesleyan University education is distinguished by its unique combination of liberal arts study, pre-professional training, and wide array of internships, research opportunities, study-travel, and study abroad opportunities that allow students to test their academic assumptions in real-world settings. OWU is one of only five independent undergraduate schools in the nation whose graduates rank in the top 20 both in the number of PhDs earned and in the number of business leaders. The University, which was founded in 1842 by the United Methodist Church, is dedicated to instilling the service ethic in its undergraduates, linking classroom theory and practical application, and preparing students for success in a global society. Students attend classes in stately historical buildings such as Elliott Hall, the University's first building, and in modern facilities such as the $35 million Conrades Wetherell Science Center.

Approximately 1,850 men and women undergraduates attend OWU. The student body comes from 47 states and 57 countries; most live on the lovely 200-acre campus. Residences include 6 large halls, a variety of smaller special interest domiciles, and seven fraternity houses (the school's five sorority houses are not residential). In 2010, the University will open three new residences specifically for upperclassmen and women.

Ohio Wesleyan has the highest percentage of international students among undergraduate, bachelor's-degree-granting colleges in the state of Ohio and one of the highest percentages among similar colleges in the United States.

Ohio Wesleyan is widely known for its national and international mission teams and local community service learning. Nearly every student participates in at least one service learning opportunity or philanthropic activity each year, and the University has been recognized by the President's Honor Roll for its service initiatives. Students also publish the nation's oldest independent student newspaper, produce four major theater pieces, and stage a number of concerts featuring OWU's large ensembles and smaller musical groups. Cultural- and ethnic-interest groups are represented by such diverse groups as the Student Union on Black Awareness, Sisters United, VIVA and SANGAM (which promote understanding of Latin American and and South Asian cultures respectively), Hillel, the Muslim Students Association, and many other religious and cultural affiliations.

OWU has 22 varsity athletic teams: 11 men's teams and 11 women's teams. Several teams are nationally ranked each year in Division III of the NCAA. The women's soccer team won its second consecutive national championship in 2002 following an undefeated season with 20 shutouts. Men's soccer earned the national crown in 1998 and has won the conference title 18 of the last 26 years; men's basketball won the NCAA Division III title in 1986. In 2001, the women's basketball team reached the national semifinals, and the men's team reached the round of 16 in the NCAA Division III tournament in 2008. In 2009, OWU captured the North Coast Athletic Conference All-Sports Trophy for the third consecutive year and the ninth time overall. Many head coaches are multiple NCAC Coaches of the Year.

OWU's intramural and club sports programs enjoy wide support throughout the student body. Students find ample facilities for training and fitness in the Branch Rickey Physical Education Center and the Health and Wellness Center.
