An Ohio Wesleyan University education is distinguished by its unique combination of liberal arts study and pre-professional training. The University, which was founded in...An Ohio Wesleyan University education is distinguished by its unique combination of liberal arts study and pre-professional training. OWU is one of only five independent undergraduate schools in the nation whose graduates rank in the top 20 both in the number of PhDs earned and in the number of business leaders. The University, which was founded in 1842 by the United Methodist Church, is dedicated to instilling the service ethic in undergraduates, to wedding theory and practical applications, and to tackling those issues that will frame the major debates of the future. Students attend classes in stately historical buildings such as Elliott Hall and in modern facilities such as the $35 million Conrades-Wetherell Science Center. Approximately 1,850 men and women undergraduates attend OWU. The student body is from 43 states and 47 countries; most live on the lovely 200-acre campus. Residences include 6 large halls, a variety of smaller special interest domiciles, and 11 fraternity houses (the school's 7 sorority houses are not residential). Proportionally, OWU has the sixth highest international student population of schools in its class. Students may choose from a large selection of co-curricular activities. Service projects, discussion groups, and intramural competitions are organized by students for students. Students also publish an independent student newspaper, produce five major theater pieces and numerous smaller studio pieces, and stage concerts featuring OWU's seven large ensembles as well as other, smaller musical groups. Cultural- and ethnic-interest groups are represented by such diverse groups as the Student Union on Black Awareness and the Christian Fellowship. Other groups perform crisis intervention work, engage in local and national politics, and serve the needs of the school's many pre-professional students. OWU has 23 varsity athletic teams: 11 men's teams, 11 women's teams, and a coed sailing team. Several teams are nationally ranked each year in Division III of the NCAA. The women's soccer team won its second consecutive national championship in 2002 following an undefeated season with 20 shutouts. Men's soccer earned the national crown in 1998; men's basketball accomplished the same remarkable feat in 1986. In 2001, the women's basketball team reached the national semifinals, a testament to the players' dedication and the skillful guidance of coach Nan Carney-DeBord, (who won the Russell Athletic/WBCA Division III Coach of the Year award in 2001). Individual honors go to Chad Poling, who won the NCAA Division III individual men's golf championship in 2004. OWU's intramural programs enjoy wide support throughout the student body. Students will also find ample facilities for swimming, weight-training, and racquet sports in the contemporary Branch Rickey Physical Education Center.
