The Air Force Academy was established in 1954 to train and motivate Air Force cadets pursuing careers in the military. The Academy emphasizes character building, military discipline, physical fitness and academic excellence. An Academy education builds valuable leadership skills in all areas.

Approximately 4000 students attend the Academy...The Air Force Academy was established in 1954 to train and motivate Air Force cadets pursuing careers in the military. The Academy emphasizes character building, military discipline, physical fitness and academic excellence. An Academy education builds valuable leadership skills in all areas.

Approximately 4000 students attend the Academy, with about 1300 as entering students (fourth class). The makeup of the student body reflects that of the corps of Air Force officers: approximately 23% women and 27% diverse. Cadets arrive from all 50 states and a number of other countries. All cadets must live on campus and wear uniforms.

The Academy is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Engineering programs are approved by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Computer courses are approved by the Computing Sciences Accreditation Board. The Commission on Professional Training of the American Chemical Society establishes the requirements made of biochemistry and chemistry majors.

Cadets are required to engage in club, intramural or intercollegiate athletics each semester. Options for intramural activity include basketball, boxing (men), cross-country, flag football, flickerball, mountain biking, racquetball, rugby (men's and women's), soccer, softball, team handball, tennis, ultimate Frisbee, volleyball and wallyball.

The Academy fields intercollegiate teams in Division I of the NCAA; its teams compete both regionally and nationally. The men compete in baseball, basketball, boxing, cheerleading, cross-country, diving, fencing, football, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, soccer, swimming, tennis, track, water polo and wrestling. Women compete in basketball, cheerleading, cross-country, diving, fencing, gymnastics, rifle, soccer, swimming, tennis, track and volleyball. More than 80 extracurricular activities are available to cadets, including competitive and recreational clubs, hobby clubs, mission support clubs, professional organizations and sports groups.

Qualified graduates of the Academy may commence flight training after graduating. About three-quarters of all cadets undertake graduate study within 10 years of graduation. Every year many graduates of the Academy are granted fellowships and scholarships, including the Guggenheim, Marshall, NCAA, National Science Foundation and Rhodes. More More
