Academics

Huston-Tillotson University is a private HBCU located in Austin, Texas, offering degrees across the College of Arts & Sciences and School of Business & Technology, as well as an alternative teacher certification and academic programs for those looking to pursue post-graduate degrees in law and medicine. The Center for Academic Excellence offers services that help students catch up and get ahead in their academic experience, while the W.E.B. Du Bois Honors Program is available to students of exceptional academic ability and curiosity, offering specialized honors courses, retreats, scholarships, and seminars. The Downs-Jones Library holds subscriptions to more than 350 periodicals, and is a member of TexShare, which lets students and faculty check out materials from other member libraries. All students are paired with an advisor with whom they spend at least two hours a week in their first-year seminar courses, as well as a peer mentor during their first year, and and, for text-based projects, a guide via the Writers’ Studio.

Career

The HT First-Year Experience (FYE) aims to build a bridge DEADLINES between new students and the university, connecting them Regular Priority 2/1 to the culture of the school and the resources available. This Deadline 5/1 experience includes the Ram Training Camp orientation Notification Rolling program, a career-based project, and peer mentors and learn-coaches. Cocurricular programming also plays a large role in the FYE, providing structured out-of-class educational experiences that introduce students to internships, career goals, and a commitment to community service.

Culture

The Career and Graduate Development Center offers resources for students in their path to employment, including self-assessment tools, salary surveys, employer research, and job listings. HT is one of 24 colleges and universities that received a grant as part of the UNCF Career Pathways Initiative, which offers students considering certain majors a four-year individualized academic experience leading directly into a career after graduation. Notable alumni include Robert G. Stanton (former National Director of the U.S. Park Service during the Clinton administration), jazz player Bobby Bradford, Azie Taylor Morton, (U.S. Treasurer during the Carter administration), and Volma Overton, an activist in the Modern Civil Rights Movement.
