What’s on the GRE

The GRE is comprised of 3 sections: Analytical Writing, Quantitative, and Verbal.

Analytical Writing GRE Section

The Analytical Writing GRE Section has 2 essays. One asks students to "present their perspective on an issue," the other asks them to "analyze an argument."

Analytical Writing GRE Section At a Glance

  • 2 essays
  • 75 minutes: 30 minutes for the "issue" essay, and 45 minutes for the "argument" essay

Quantitative GRE Section

The Quantitative GRE Section tests high-school level math. You'll need to know arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and data analysis.

Verbal GRE Section

The Verbal GRE Section has sentence completion questions, analogies, antonyms, and reading comprehension questions.
