Founded in 1845 in Springfield, Ohio, Wittenberg is a private, coeducational, liberal arts and sciences college affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. In keeping with its mission, Wittenberg provides an education dedicated to intellectual inquiry and wholeness of person within a diverse residential community. Reflecting its Lutheran heritage, Wittenberg also challenges students to become responsible global citizens, to discover their callings, and to lead personal, professional, and civic lives of creativity, service, compassion, and integrity. Wittenberg enrolls approximately 2,000 full-time students, representing more than 41 states and 19 countries around the world. Wittenberg's students live on or near campus, making the campus a full-time, 24-hour-a-day, 7-day-a-week campus. All first- and second-year students reside in the residence halls; juniors and seniors have the option to remain in the residence halls, move off campus into a house or apartment, or live in a fraternity or sorority house. Wittenberg's strong arts and sciences programs and community service make its graduates attractive to prominent medical, law, and graduate programs. More than 20 percent of Wittenberg graduates begin graduate programs immediately after graduation, and 70 percent eventually pursue an advanced degree at some point in their careers. Wittenberg ranks in the 92nd percentile in Ph.D. production of all U.S. four-year colleges over the last 25 years. Graduates have enjoyed successful careers in a variety of fields, including education, business, science, fine and performing arts, politics, medicine, ministry, dentistry, and law. Wittenberg competes in the nationally renowned Division III North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC), which consists of 10 academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Indiana. The NCAC features championship competition in 23 sports--11 for men and 12 for women. There is also a full list of club sports for men and women, including crew, ice hockey, golf, rugby, volleyball, and cricket. Wittenberg is accredited by the Higher Education Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, the American Association of University Women, the American Chemical Society, the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education, and the National Association of Schools of Music.
