Colgate Students Say...

Colgate boasts a “happy and enthusiastic student body” that “follows the motto ’work hard, play hard.’” Many say a typical student is “white, very well-rounded, a hard partier,” and “rich and preppy.” A sophomore says, “Imagine

J. Crew models. Now give them brains, and that is who is walking around Colgate’s campus.” Fraternities and sororities ...

J. Crew models. Now give them brains, and that is who is walking around Colgate’s campus.” Fraternities and sororities are popular: “Greek life does have a huge presence in the social life at Colgate,” but “it is not exclusive to just those who are members.” An English major says, “I wouldn’t describe the party scene as being [full of] peer pressure, but there are few alternatives, so if it’s not your preferred pastime you may find yourself very bored.” There are students who wish the university would be “a little tighter with alcohol control.” Some students wish the administration would work harder to “break down huge social barriers that exist between people of different races,” and say, “The campus is striving to make the campus more diverse, but unfortunately the diverse groups like to keep…[to] themselves.” However, despite the “country club atmosphere,” a computer science major says, “When you’re stranded in Hamilton, New York, for four years you’ll inevitably end up fitting in regardless whether you are the typical student or not.” More More
