Students Say

Located just thirty minutes away from downtown St. Louis, the School of Business at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville offers an "exceptional and…convenient" MBA program with courses in evening and weekend formats on the Edwardsville campus. This "up and coming school" offers "a well-rounded program" that is "taught by professors with real world experience." The school's curriculum, which includes condensed eight week courses, tends to be more general, meaning that students "take a wide variety of classes" and follow a pretty standard structure. Though some wish that there were "more possible concentrations" and the program was less geared towards "non-business undergrads," most are quite pleased with the degree they obtain here since the school is "in the midst of an expansion."

Students love most of their "exceptional" professors and feel that "they relate the coursework to everyday life." They "seem to truly care about students learning and being able to apply information in the real world," and "know how to communicate their information to their students effectively." "Their ability to answer questions from their experience in the field has earned my respect," says one admiring student. "Most of my professors still consult in their respective industries. They are very current on business trends and developments," says a student.

Though the overall satisfaction level is quite high, people agree that the school could stand to "weed out some of the less effective professors"; while most "are readily available for appointments or have preset office times," a handful "could not be inconvenienced with meeting with students outside normal class time." The school's administration is known for being "easily accessible and friendly," "has made planning classes easy," and has "a great concept of real-world work life [that they] implement . . . in the classroom." Classes here place a great deal of emphasis on group work, which is furthered by the "ease of communication through online resources (great e-presence)."

Students Say

Most students at SIUE "seem to be working professionals pursuing their MBA in order to enhance their income or receive a promotion," and "SIUE has the best value for the level of accreditation of all St. Louis area schools." Some wish that the school would "align coursework with skills needed for upper management"; the more experienced students are pretty much in agreement that classes are a breeze. "The instructors are good, but anyone who breathes gets a B," says one. A couple of students who are looking to get placed into a new job directly after graduation wish that the school would "add more networking and recruiting efforts aimed specifically at MBA students," but others have lauded the school for its "helpfulness when acquiring an assistantship," among other things. Its base efforts are also appreciated: "I went to a mock interview at the CDC, and I was treated seriously and went away from the experience pleased that I'd spent the time. Plus, they've always offered (organized) career fairs, resume services, and other professional events to the MBA students, as well as the undergraduate students."

Demographics

Campus Life

Students Say

The students at SIUE are "a near equal mix of recent undergraduate graduates and returning adults," all of whom are "very competitive, yet helpful and friendly." Everybody "is nice," and "it helps that everybody is working on their MBA for similar reasons." Though many in the MBA program just drop in for classes (one student says that "social life is not existent among MBA students"), there are "many various clubs, sports, Greek life, and volunteer options at SIUE" on this "vibrant and active campus" for those who do choose to participate.

Aside from its extremely convenient location near St. Louis, the campus is located on its own 2600 acres, "making it non-commercialized, which is another plus." Furthermore, "the size is perfect and the accommodations are excellent."
