The City College of New York (CCNY), the founding College of the CUNY system, remains entrenched in the historic foundation of research and recognition. With over 21 research institutes, ranging from robotics to climate and biodiversity, paired with almost a dozen Alumni who are Nobel Prize recipients, The City College of New York is the original and is still meeting the needs of New York City, and the world.
Since 1847, The City College of New York has provided a high quality and affordable education to generations of New Yorkers in a wide variety of disciplines. CCNY embraces its role at the forefront of social change.
For many years, the City College of New York has been listed among the top colleges in the Princeton Review "Best 384 Colleges" with consecutive rankings. CCNY has also been ranked #1 by The Chronicle of Higher Education out of 369 selective public colleges in the United States on the overall mobility index. This measure reflects both access and outcomes, representing the likelihood that a student at CCNY can move up two or more income quintiles. In addition, the Center for world University Rankings places CCNY in the top 1.2% of universities worldwide in terms of academic excellence, and most recently (2020) a new report from the Brookings Institution ranks The City College of New York third among four-year schools with the greatest success in lifting low-income students into the middle class. More than 16,000 students pursue undergraduate and graduate degrees in eight professional schools and divisions, driven by significant funded research, creativity and scholarship. CCNY is as diverse, dynamic and visionary as New York City itself.

The successful applicant will have competed an academic, college-preparatory high school program. Overall average, strength of curriculum, grades in individual courses and standardized test scores are considered in the decision process. Evidence of strong math and science skills is also required for programs in engineering, medicine, science and architecture. City College visits many high schools in the New York Metropolitan area and also encourages interested students to take advantage of our campus tours and fall open house. The priority deadline of February 1st for fall admission applies to most programs, however those applying to our more competitive programs (architecture, engineering, medicine and honors programs) are required to apply during the fall semester of senior year. Admission decisions are sent out on a rolling basis beginning in early February.

This fertile academic, cultural, and historic ground is also home to many renowned filmmakers who have emerged from City College's film school, one of the earliest established in the US; Academy Award winners such as Stanley Kubrick, editor Alan Heim (All that Jazz), cinematographer Nestor Almendros (Days of Heaven) and Joshua Brand (Northern Exposure, St. Elsewhere). Director Stanley Nelson whose accolades include Emmy and MacArthur "Genius" awards along with Sundance Film Festival recognition, is regarded as the foremost chronicler of the African American experience working in nonfiction film today — and is a CCNY Alum.
Our goal is to identify and recruit students who will thrive at City College and contribute to its rich history of inclusiveness and student achievement. Prominent alumni include General Colin Powell, Andrew Grove, Jonas Salk, and a host of others.

Financial Aid
As the founding institution of the CUNY system, the mission of providing students with access to a quality education, regardless of their financial means has always been at the core of what we do at City College. Since 1847, the City College of New York has maintained its commitment to access and excellence and has supported the educational goals and dreams of families within New York City and across the world.
In order to continue to provide opportunities to our community and beyond, our Financial Aid offices will work with you to combine scholarships, grants, loans, work-study opportunities and governmental benefits into a package to help meet the difference between the cost of college and the contributions you and your family are able to provide.

From The School
The diversity of the student body, the not-so-typical college experience courtesy of life in one of the most vibrant cities in the world, and the opportunities for cultural, social, intellectual and emotional growth, ranks at the top of the list for many incoming and current students. This has made CCNY one of the most valuable hidden treasures within the city of New York. When we speak of diversity at CCNY is not just ethnic—it is also political, economic, academic, age, and every other means of categorization all coming together—which means that we are one CCNY.
All of our students are seeking excellence and feel that they have something to bring to the table. On an average day you can walk through the college, across our incredibly beautiful & green Harlem based campus, and see the unique interactions that students are having. Most students are commuters, and many are immigrants or come from immigrant families, but after some time at City and in this city, most grow to pair their natural identity with that of being a "true" New Yorker. This campus has always been beautiful, always sought to be inclusive and accessible, and has always been ahead of its time. The City College of New York is and has always been "a movement", and it's time for you to join!

Campus Facilities & Equipment
Leading CUNY in funded research, we house a number of research centers, and two new advanced research centers located on our South Campus. We maintain a proud sense of exclusivity, in that nowhere else in the city do undergraduates have so many opportunities to conduct research with professors and publish and present their findings. In our science, engineering and social science programs, more than 300 undergrads work alongside senior researchers in funded projects.
Nearly all of our full-time faculty hold PhDs or — like our architecture faculty, maintain professional practices. Art professors exhibit their work, film professors make films, and music professors perform in venues around the country.
We are innovators — from outstanding programs in architecture, engineering, education and the liberal arts, to groundbreaking initiatives in the sciences; we prepare our students for the future, and produce outstanding leaders in every field. Whether they are drawn to the traditional, like philosophy or sociology, or emerging fields like sonic arts or biomedical engineering, our baccalaureate graduates go on to graduate programs at Stanford, Columbia or MIT — or they stay right here in one of our 50 master's programs or our doctoral programs in engineering, the laboratory sciences, and psychology.
