Sustainability

The sustainability movement is certainly sweeping across the campus of the Art Center College of Design. For starters, the school's dining services is eager to embrace green living. Indeed, the cafeteria has replaced all non-recyclable disposables with compostable items. It has also established a recycling area as well. Moreover, the college recently created a popular community garden. And Art Center has even added filtered water units to their drinking fountains, which dispense both hot and cold water. Now students and faculty can enjoy a fresh glass of water with less guilt! The college also endeavors to bring environmental ideas and issues into the classroom. In fact, students can enroll in courses such as "Design for Sustainability" which teaches undergraduate designers to consider the environmental consequences of the materials they use, their production methods, and even the performance and lifespan of whatever they choose to create. And, in an effort to make sure the entire Art Center College community gets in on the discussion, the college hosts many events, panels and symposiums based around environmental ideas and initiatives. Students, faculty and staff have the opportunity to attend talks on topics such as wind energy and renewable energy policy, energy security, visions for urban living, and the tools to drive action on climate change. Overall, the Art Center College of Design is doing an impressive job of marrying art with environmental advocacy. Hopefully, their graduates will continue to carry this sustainable torch!
