Academics
Operating in four separate campuses across Mobile and Washington County in Alabama, Bishop State Community College provides open access to affordable and quality education, catering to students with both academic and professional goals. As a member of the Alabama Community College System, students in the academic transfer program can earn an Associate of Arts or an Associate of Sciences degree in 15 humanities-related subjects. BSCC's many professional certificate programs are aligned with labor-market trends to ensure that students are on the fast track to exciting career opportunities. The Health Sciences program prepares students to be nurses, physical therapy assistants, and experts in health information technology and medical coding. Career Technical Education offers associate degrees in Occupational Technology and Applied Sciences, as well as 11 certificates in fields such as culinary arts, early childhood education, and graphic communications technology. Workforce Development offers further opportunities in everything from line worker training to ship fitting and marine electrical certifications.
Career
BSCC adds a sense of fun to its academic and professional culture. In addition to accessing career goal assistance, schedule planning, and scholarship acquisition services through the Academic Advising Center, students, known as Wildcats, enjoy buy-one-get-one-free course enrollment specials and a student ice-cream mixer that kicks off the school year. True to local tradition, all students enjoy a few days off from class in February to celebrate Mardi Gras. Clubs on campus further reflect the Wildcat spirit. The Wildcat Ambassadors act as hosts on campus, ensuring that visiting scholars and prospective students are welcomed with characteristic Southern hospitality. The pep squad sees to it that athletes hear their fans as they compete in men and women's basketball and golf, as well as baseball and fastpitch softball. In addition, there are numerous other student organizations for a range of interests, everything from honors societies and student government to choir and the culinary arts.
Culture
The school offers assistance in assessing career goals and also offers students an online career coach. BSCC alumni go on to attain four-year degrees or develop careers in the technical fields. In recent years, nearly 30% of graduates pursued technical careers related to health care and health sciences. Celebrated alumni include Lawrence L. Battiste, IV, a chief of police in Mobile, Alabama; and Mel Showers, a former WKRG news anchor.
