Academics

Southern University at Shreveport is a two-year junior col- be more proximate to the city's business center. Programs on offer are intended for all outcomes, including transfer, vocational training, and professional advancement for working or unemployed individuals. There are 15 associate degree programs and several certification and technical programs. Classes are offered online or at one of three academic centers throughout the city, including the university's Aerospace Technology Center at the Shreveport Downtown Airport, which occupies two aircraft hangars and places classroom space in the main terminal. Many programs are designed for direct entry into the workforce (such as Accounting, Hospitality Management, and EMT-Paramedic training), whereas some are designated as Louisiana Transfer degrees, with the goal of transferring to a four-year institution to work toward a bachelor's degree as seamlessly as possible. The Center for Student Success offers a First Year Experience program that prepares students for the transition to college, and all students who find themselves struggling have full access to Success Coaches who can provide individualized advice and guidance.

Career

The University Museum of Art at Shreveport (SUMAS) is a collection of art, artifacts, and other works of Africans, African Americans, and their descendants, and it is free to all. The Jaguar Courtyard is an on-campus residential community for students to find all of the conveniences needed to focus on their academics (even furniture), and the J.L. Vance Student Activity Center provides a centralized location for student activities and service. There are two athletic teams at SUSLA (men’s and women’s basketball), as well as a host of performance opportunities, including The Marching Jags Marching Band, a concert band, and a pep band.

Culture

The Division of Community and Workforce Development offers non-credit continuing education classes that correspond to the service and development needs of the surrounding communities (initiatives include corporate training and small business development); the department provides hands-on job experiences and placement after training is complete. Career Services works with both students and alumni to prepare them for job opportunities, and the Reboot Your Career program is specifically designed for those who lost their jobs during the pandemic and are looking to move into a different line of work.
