Academic Programs

Kogod offers two distinct MBA programs to meet students' unique personal and professional needs. Students may choose the immersive full-time MBA, or select the part-time Professional MBA, designed for professionals who wish to continue working while pursuing their degree. The Kogod full-time MBA is designed to be a career catalyst for ambitious professionals. In 21 months, graduates acquire the knowledge, skills, and experience required to achieve professional success. Students complete the core in the first year, leaving the second year open to electives.

Students gain knowledge and skills in both domestic and global business through experience and interaction with clients, professors, business leaders, and fellow students, both inside and outside of the classroom. Students may pursue a specialized consulting focus, developed with leading federal and commercial consulting firms, to prepare for consulting in human capital, finance, IT or strategy. Alternatively, students may choose electives with an emphasis on accounting, entrepreneurship, sustainability management, or other business disciplines. Internships, career development, and volunteer opportunities ensure students graduate with an extensive network of contacts from the American University community and beyond.

Kogod's Professional MBA (PMBA) is designed for working professionals seeking to advance their careers. The PMBA's comprehensive, cohort-based design allows students to continue working and complete their degree in 27 consecutive months by attending class one night a week.

The program's concierge-style services and hybrid teaching approach helps students achieve a positive work-life balance. Course materials, an iPad, meals during class time, course registration, and an international travel-study experience are all included in the tuition. The program is structured so students can take courses one at a time, with classes sequenced to build upon one another. This allows students to absorb and retain material better, and provides the opportunity s to work with peers in a collaborative environment.

Kogod also offers specialized masters programs in Accounting, Analytics, Finance, Marketing, Real Estate, Sustainability Management, and Taxation that provide advanced training from real-world professionals and thought leaders. Students gain expertise in their chosen field through a combination of classroom, practical, and career management experience. Kogod leverages its connections within each industry to help students broaden their knowledge about career options, current industry trends, and the general industry landscape.

Students Say

With an "emphasis on global learning" and fulfilling academics enriched by guest speakers from different industries, the Kogod School of Business at American University lets students enroll in an international program. Each of the first two semesters of the full-time program kicks off with a two-week intensive Signature Course that "prepares [students] for working in the global economy," and Full-Time, Professional, and Online MBA options ensure that any qualified and willing student can make a Kogod program work for their schedule; the professional program even benefits from the school providing concierge style service to its members, which includes dinner before class.

"A very organized, easy-to-interpret class framework" sets the tone for these seamless programs, where a focus on presentation skills and case analysis runs throughout. Fulltime students can apply their knowledge to real-world client projects, choosing between a consulting focus, an elective schedule forged from Kogod's variety of offerings, or a managerial emphasis. All full-time students must also complete a global consulting project with an international client in their second year (professional students do a study abroad trip).

Professors at Kogod are "genuinely interested in seeing us succeed and extend themselves as much as possible." Their "willingness to help you with anything, whether its academics, external projects, or career advice" is a notable benefit of the small class sizes, and it means that "each student can ensure that they can get attention on a particular topic that they may be struggling with." "I have had some great professors who have taken out the time to really go deep into the material being taught to make sure that the class is understanding and grasping the subject," says a student. The administration is similarly "mindful of needs of working professional students and move quickly to increase the ease of our user experience" and is "active in addressing issues that we bring to them to ensure that we are getting the best possible education."

Campus Life

From The School

At Kogod, we believe education should extend beyond the classroom. Hands-on experiences enhance leadership ability, communication skills, and self-confidence. Kogod Leadership and Applied Business (K-LAB), Kogod Global Learning, and the Kogod Center for Business Communications allow students to learn valuable professional skills in real-world settings, including the annual case competition, student clubs, international travel, and community volunteer programs.

Students Say

There is a distinct "emphasis on cooperation rather than competition" across all three programs, and "even though we all want to do our best, we do not tear each other down to do so." There are "lots of good clubs" on this "very active" campus that is "small and easy to get around," and students form study groups to help each other understand the information being taught and meet regularly. The small cohorts of the professional program tend to grow especially close: "After every exam, almost the entire class meets up at a local watering hole afterwards to talk about our personal lives, not the test we just took," says one student. "It takes a certain type of character to work full-time and go to school, but these people do it flawlessly."
