Faculty Information

Students Say

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's Kenan-Flagler Business School's online MBA@UNC program offers a dynamic blend of academic experiences: part asynchronous or self-paced coursework, part synchronous online class sessions, and quarterly three-day, leadership-focused global immersion sessions. Students are quick to laud MBA@UNC's "very involved" immersion opportunities in "global locations" that "[bring] the coursework and concepts together" in "useful workshops and lectures" with "lots of time to socialize and network with our peers." And students say these sessions really make a difference: "The San Francisco immersion was focused on entrepreneurship and honestly changed my life. I decided that weekend that I would start my business within 18 months." They call their classmates "smart, and hard-working professionals" who "range from high performers early in their careers to senior executives," as well as "a large number of military officers." They tend to have a "strong work ethic, great time management skills and together represent a truly diverse student body" with backgrounds that include "finance, engineering, project management, military, etc." Administratively, "MBA@UNC knows what they are doing and seems to be setting the standard for online education. From discussions with classmates who work for firms like 2U, UNC is well above the other programs they have seen for both administration, experience, professors and content." UNC has "excellent professors" who are "stalwarts in their field of specialization" and deliver "very clear and crisp lectures" while curating an "interactive environment" for "class discussions on important topics." Students argue that the "small class sizes demand participation and preparation" from everyone, and the "[average] work experience of class[mates] also creates a challenging environment of high performers." Weekly synchronous virtual classes of about 10–15 students are led by faculty instructors and cover case discussions, role plays and breakout groups, while the 2NC Learning Management System allows students to access materials on mobile devices 24/7 around the globe.

Career Services Overview

Students Say

Students count MBA@UNC's "2U platform (technology) and [the] personal interaction that it supports" between "classmates, professors, career services" as a critical driver in their career success: "I loved my teachers, found the material challenging, interesting, and practical. In fact, though I've been studying leadership for more than 20 years, I'd say that the combination of theory and practice embedded in the MBA@UNC courses I took rank at or near the top in terms of developing leaders." Entering students tend to be on the high end of average age and length of work experience. During the program 75 percent report getting a promotion and graduates see a 21 percent rise in salary on average. They note particular career value in UNC's immersive programs. Accounting, economics, finance, leadership/management, marketing operations, organizational behavior, teamwork, presentation skills, and quantitative skills stand out as strengths of a UNC education.
