Career Experience
I was a middle school (Grades 6-8) educator for about 6 years collectively. In 2011-12, I taught a math support class for Grades 6-8. My role was to assist struggling learners to fill gaps in their understanding of basic math concepts so they could be successful in their core math class. I was moved to an 8th grade English Language Arts class in 2012-13. My role was to facilitate students' mastery in the areas of reading, vocabulary skills, grammar, and writing. In 2013-14, I moved to the state of Florida, so I needed to find employment closer to my new home. I was placed in a 6th grade math class where I taught number operations, geometry, and statistics. In January 2016, I began working for a non-profit organization founded to help at-risk girls succeed in academics and improve their social, mental, and emotional health. I taught English Language Arts in Grades 6-8. I left this role in 2017 to become a full-time parent. Since 2017, I have worked as a virtual tutor for English Language Learners in various parts of the world. I have structured and implemented small-group lessons in science and reading for elementary and middle school students. I have also provided 1-on-1 tutoring for a 6th grader in the areas of reading, vocabulary skills, and grammar. Additionally, I have been homeschooling my daughter since the fall of 2020. She is now in the first grade. Homeschooling has motivated me to keep up with current trends in pedagogy and educational standards.
I Love Tutoring Because
I like having the ability to individualize the learning experience for a smaller group of students. I especially like helping students review prerequisite skills and helping them to make connections to the content being taught in their grade level. Smaller groups also make it easier for me to observe student progress.
