Career Experience
I've spent the last several years as an English instructor at various colleges across the U.S. In this capacity, I have mostly taught composition and poetry courses, two subjects more closely related than many are willing to acknowledge. Aside from classroom teaching, I've taught courses online and in hybrid formats. I've also tutored online now for over six years; and I've tutored in writing centers for about as long. Before teaching and tutoring, I worked as a copy editor for my undergraduate school's online branch—editing, writing, rewriting, and formatting all of the university's online courses. And while my professional career has been spent primarily teaching composition, my bachelor's and master's degrees are in literary studies and creative writing, both of which I still practice regularly.
I Love Tutoring Because
I love tutoring because, unlike teaching an entire class, I get to spend one-on-one time helping individual students become stronger writers and thinkers, and more capable users of the English language. At the end of a tutoring session, if I can see even the smallest increase in a student's understanding, my day is made.
